Happy Navratri!
I remember my first garba in Canada. There was no crowd, enough place to really move every part of the body as we danced to the beats. Then I knew only and heard only of the Falguni Pathak garba event or the Geentanjali group garba events. In 6 years, the crowd has increased exponentially. There are many more garba events that take place such as Praful Dave and Atul Purohit.
This year I only attended one garba event where Atul Purohitji came to sing. The crowd was crazy. I probably hit and stepped on a lot of people. My height was definitely an advantage since I could move my hands above fellow dancer's heads and a little more freely. Nonetheless, it was a lot of fun. It always is. The music is very much traditional and classical but every time I hear those beats, my body automatically wants to start dancing garba and don't want to stop until I actually am huffing and puffing. Later at night you realize just how much your legs are paining. This garba event was yesterday night and today morning I had my kathak class. When I got home, I could no longer climb the staircase that day without not experiencing pain. Even so, I cant complain. It is my dream to dress up completely and properly once, with all the traditional jewellery and traditional chaniya cholis and dance garba.
