Today being the costume rehearsal, I had to dress up like I was going to dress up on the day of the performance. I had tons of makeup on, nicely done hair and the heavy ghungroos of course. Having been a team member of my University's Indian club's dance team, I have learnt a lot about stage performances. For one, a LOT of bright, visible, heavy makeup should be worn. Two, the expressions are supposed to be exaggerated. Three, practice so many times that even if you have to dance in your sleep your body should move exactly the way it's supposed to.
Of course, every practice has to be exactly how you would do it on stage, with much more energy than you would want to show on stage and with complete expressions. Like my mentor said: When you are on stage, you get nervous, excited and whole lot of other things and these things have an affect on the energy level. Therefore, it is essential that in you should put more energy in your practices so that your brain gets programmed. As a result, even if you are nervous on stage, it wont reflect via your energy levels. This definitely works and every time I practice, I put in 200% effort.
